Grant Mitchell, Anne Shirley, and Queenie Smith sign a piece of paper to a fan.
Inscribed signatures: "to Maurice/Grant Mitchell", "Best w [paper missing]/Maurice/Queenie Smith" and "To/Maurice/with the/best of/Anne Shirley", 9¼x4½ irregularly cut page. MITCHELL (1875-1957) graduated from Harvard Law School and practiced law for several years before turning to the stage. He was a favorite of George M. Cohan, who wrote The Baby Cyclone (1927) around Mitchell. In films from the early 1930s, he played leads in some "B" movies (Father Is a Prince, 1939) and character roles in "A" films (The Man Who Came To Dinner, 1942), often as a grouchy parent or small town bigwig. SHIRLEY (1918-1993) had the title role in Anne of Green Gables (1934), taking that character's name as her screen name. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Stella Dallas (1937). A child in silent films from age 7, she retired from acting in 1944. SMITH (1897-1978), a Broadway favorite of the 1920s starred in Cohan's Tip Toes (1925). She was in film musicals of the next decade, Mississippi (1935) and Show Boat (1936). She matured into feisty bit parts, such as the cussing old lady playing Scrabble in Foul Play (1978). She was a regular cast member of the TV sitcom The Funny Side (1971). There are fragments of other signatures on front and verso, as well as ink notes (unknown hand). Lightly creased and soiled, with some tears at margins.
