Handwritten note by the leading man turned character actor
Autograph Note signed: "To Joyce -/Happiness and Success/Grant
Withers", 4x2¾. Grant Withers (1904-1959), born Granville Withers,
appeared in at least 200 films and TV shows between 1925 and 1959. A leading
man in the early talking era, he was billed above Joan Blondell and James
Cagney in Sinner's Holiday (1930), and appeared on screen with W.
C. Fields, Buster Keaton, Mae West, Shirley Temple and Boris Karloff. He married
Loretta Young in 1930, but the marriage was annulled the following year. His
starring roles in the 1930s included the serials Jungle Jim (1937) and
Mr. Wong (1938), but his last two decades were spent in supporting
roles, often as a Western villain. A friend of John Wayne, Withers
appeared in nine of his films, and Wayne was best man at Withers' fifth
marriage (1953). Withers made many TV guest appearances in the 1950s, but -
discouraged by failing health - he committed suicide in 1959. Toned. Corners
lightly worn. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
