GRANVILLE HICKS
The literary critic discusses the early death of author Flannery O'Connor
Typed Letter signed: "Granville Hicks", 1 page, 8½x5½. Grafton, New York, 1964 November 24. On personal letterhead to "Dear Mr. Sessie", in full: "Miss O'Connor died on August 3 last. She had been ill for a long time, and was on crutches when I saw her in April 1962. She was only 39. A book of short stories is being published early next year, and I plan to make my review of it a consideration of her whole career. I am very glad that you like SR. I don't work in the office, but I'm sure you can find out about back issues if you address the Circulation Manager. Sincerely yours". American literary critic Granville Hicks (1901-1982) secured his reputation with publication of The Great Tradition in 1933. His articles appeared in many journals, and he had a long running column, "Literary Horizons," in the Saturday Review. Hicks joined the Communist Party in 1934, but quit the party in 1939 following the Nazi-Soviet Pact. The following year, he wrote "The Blind Alley of Marxism," and spent the rest of his career as a staunch anti-communist. Influential Southern writer Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964) is the person Hicks is discussing in this letter. She contracted lupus in 1950, and struggled with the disease until her early death. Multiple mailing folds. Fine condition.
