Photograph inscribed and signed: "To-/Helen/Sincerely/Paulette/Goddard" and "Helen Checco/Sincerely/Chas Chaplin". B/w, 10x8. Captioned at lower margin: "Charles Chaplin in 'The Great Dictator'". ©1940, United Artists. CHARLIE CHAPLIN played the dual role of a Jewish barber and the dictator of Tomania, Adenoid Hynkel, in his first all-talking motion picture. It was his last appearance as the Little Tramp. In this scene, he is with Hannah (PAULETTE GODDARD) in the Jewish ghetto. Chaplin and Goddard were married from 1936-1942. In addition to starring, Chaplin produced, directed and wrote the screenplay for The Great Dictator. He was nominated for two Oscars (actor, screenplay). The movie was released in 1940, but the script was written before Hitler's invasion of Poland in 1939. Chaplin later said that had he known the scope of the evil perpetrated on Europe by the Nazis he would never have made them the subject of this lampoon. Creased, 1 touches the "n" in Chaplin.
