Autograph letter signed: "Greg Gumbel", in black ink, 5x8. December 6, 1983. Accompanied by original mailing envelope. In full: "Dear Eddie + Betty, Thank you for your note of November 30th, and for the kind invitation. If I'm ever in the area, I'd be happy to stop in. I'm also honored that you've requested an autographed picture - It is en route to you under separate cover [item not included]. Continued best wishes to you + yours. Sincerely". Greg Gumbel (b. 1946), younger brother of sportscaster Bryant Gumbel, is himself a sportscaster and was the first African American announcer to call play-by-play of a major sports championship in the United States. Graduating from University with a B.A. in English, Gumbel ultimately began broadcasting when his brother told him of a job opening at a Chicago TV station. He landed the job, ultimately replacing future ABC Sports President Dennis Swanson. He has since worked for several news stations, spending several years with CBS Sports, and anchoring for several sporting events such as the 1994 Winter Olympics, 1994 MLB All-Star Game, and several Super Bowls.
