GREG JARVIS
Letter from the payload specialist describing his objectives for the upcoming Challenger 51-L mission
Typed Letter Signed: "Greg Jarvis" 1p, 8½x11. Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas, no date but late 1985 or January 1986. To Jamie. In full: "Thank you for your nice letter and interest in the upcoming shuttle flight. In regard to your questions, my official title on the mission is 'Payload Specialist' and I will be conducting experiments in fluid dynamics during the flight. The space shuttle cover you sent me was very interesting. If you happen to have an extra one, I would like one for myself. I have autographed it for you along with the 51-L crew patch you requested, and you will find them both enclosed (not present)." Greg Jarvis (1944-1986) was originally assigned to be on flight 51-G but he and astronaut Charlie Walker were replaced by the first Arab in space and the first Frenchman on a U.S. flight, launched June 17, 1985. Jarvis was reassigned to flight 51-I but he was also bumped from that August 27, 1985 flight. He was then reassigned to flight 51-L aboard the Challenger as the payload specialist. On January 28, 1986, Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff, killing Jarvis and his six colleagues. Fine condition. Framed in Gallery of History style: 31x21.
