GREGG M. SINCLAIR and THERON C. LIDDLE
The Deseret News editor signed and sent this letter in late 1968, 12 years after the recipient retired from his post as President of the University of Hawaii
Document Signed: “Gregg M. Sinclair” and “Theron C. Liddle”. 8½x11. Dated November 25, 1968. Letterhead from the Deseret News. Letter In Part: I would like your permission to use the quote attributed to you...if you do not hold the copyright on this material, would you please forward this request to the proper copyright holder, then to be returned to me”. With Sinclair's signature is a note of refusal; he explains, in full:Would that I could help you in this matter, but, alas, I did not originate the sentence nor do I know who did. I feel flattered that someone should think I did. Perhaps Bennett Cerf-an old friend-put my name down to one of his quips. I don't know”. Cerf was a well-connected publisher who co-founded Random House. Theron C. Liddle (1912-1977) was a writer who published a series titled A Thought for Today throughout the 1960s, encompassing a total of five volumes. These books were collections of quotes from notable people that he hand-selected from speeches and publications. He was managing editor at the Deseret News from 1949-1971. Gregg Manners Sinclair was born in Ontario, Canada, but spent most of his life in the U.S. state of Hawaii. After earning his master's degree from Columbia University in 1919, he taught English overseas for a time before he moved to Hawaii to teach in 1928. After his marriage to novelist and historian Marjorie Putnam Sinclair, he was named University President, a position he held until 1956. One of his many interests was Japanese culture, which eventually led to the creation of the Oriental Institute at the University of Hawaii. Mailing creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
