U.N. stamp affixed, pictorially postmarked United Nations, NY, February 10,
1958, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Russian-born nuclear physicist Gregory Breit
(1899-1981), naturalized as a US citizen in 1918, did early work in radio,
demonstrating the existence of the postulated ionosphere by receiving return
signals of a pulsed radio beam sent from the earth's surface. Rubber-stamped
addressed to a Detroit collector. Slightly creased. Pencil and ink notes
(unknown hand) on verso, ink note lightly shows through. Overall, fine
condition.
