METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER PURCHASED A NUMBER OF NATIONAL FILM
EXCHANGES RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF FILM PRINTS
AND PUBLICITY INFORMATION. IT WAS AN IMPORTANT PURCHASE, FOR
IT MEANT THAT M-G-M NOW HAD ITS OWN MAJOR THEATER CHAIN,
CONTROLLING BOTH PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION. After the purchase,
the new salesmen were invited to the studio for a special convention. On Thursday, May 19,
1927, M-G-M hosted the "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Convention Luncheon" in Culver City,
California, probably followed by a studio tour. On Friday, May 20th, the entire group of
salesmen was officially brought into the M-G-M family at an outdoor event held behind the
Ambassador Hotel, where the guests were put up for the long weekend. This photograph
captures the outdoor occasion at which studio cowboys and Indians entertained the guests. One
of the salesmen had this souvenir photograph signed by the M-G-M stars. He has signed: "me"
on his hat. The 26 stars who signed this photograph represented a cross-section of
M-G-M. Some were silent screen stars whose careers ended with the advent of "talkies".
Others made a smooth transition to sound. A TRULY EXTRAORDINARY
PHOTOGRAPH BEARING, AMONG OTHERS, TWO OF THE MOST SOUGHT
AFTER HOLLYWOOD AUTOGRAPHS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY:
GARBO AND CHANEY. Two items.
