Groucho Marx signs a document with the IRS on December 6, 1957.
Carbon Partly Printed DS: "Julius H (Groucho) Marx" in ink as Taxpayer, 1p, 8x10½. Beverly Hills, California, 1957 December 6. Form 872. Headed: "U.S. Treasury Department - Internal Revenue Service/Consent Fixing Period of Limitation Upon/Assessment of Income and Profits Tax". Begins: "In pursuance of the provisions of existing Internal Revenue Laws Julius H. (Groucho) Marx (or taxpayers) of 1083 Hillcrest Road, Beverly Hills, California, and the District Director of Internal Revenue (or Assistant Regional Commissioner-Appellate) hereby consent and agree as follows: That the amount of any income, excess-profits, or war-profits due under any return (or returns) made by or on behalf of the above-named taxpayer (or taxpayers) for the taxable year ended December 31, 1953, under existing acts, or under prior revenue acts, may be assessed at any time on or before June 30, 1959, except that, if a notice of deficiency in tax is sent to said taxpayer (or taxpayers) by registered mail on or before said date, then the time for making any assessment as aforesaid shall be extended beyond the said date by the number of days during which the making of an assessment is prohibited and for sixty days thereafter." Also signed: "WF Upson" as Chief, Field Audit Branch. In the year he signed this document, Groucho appeared in two feature films, The Story of Mankind and Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?, in addition to hosting his popular TV quiz show, You Bet Your Life (1950-1961). The leader of the zany Marx Brothers, Julius "Groucho" Marx (1890-1977) enjoyed success in vaudeville, on Broadway, in motion pictures and on television. He was famous for his crouched walk, outrageous mustache, ever-present cigar and lecherous glances at female co-stars. The most popular Marx Brothers films, which remain cult favorites, include Duck Soup (1933) and A Night at the Opera (1935). Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Receipt stamp and ink note (unknown hand) at upper right margin. Fine condition.
