TLS: "Groucho", 1 page, 8½x11. Los Angeles, California, 1968 September 18. To "Yorkshire Productions, Inc. c/o Katz, Moselle & Schier, Esqs./437 Madison Avenue/New York, New York 10022/Attention: Mr. Harold Messing". In full: "Enclosed are three copies of the Kraft Music Hall contract dated August 23, 1968, which I have signed as requested along with the W-4 Form, also signed. I am sending you the speech mostly written by Hal Kanter, for which I am doing two free days' work in Diahann Carroll's Show. Also enclosed are the additional pages you sent me after you forwarded the original script. I wasn't enamored with your first script so you sent me some more material which had some very funny stuff in it. I'm trusting your good judgment to pick out whatever you feel is funny from your stuff and incorporate it with Kanter's script, then send me a reconstructed script immediately so I can familiarize myself with it before I come to New York next week. I hope this is clear to you - it certainly isn't to me. I'm sure the final script will me either on cards, the teleprompter or something. At any rate, it'd better be, because if it isn't, you may find me in Mr. Paley's little park that he just built for frustrated actors and bum comics." In a postscript, Groucho adds: "P.S. Precisely what date do you want me to come to New York - would September 26th by (sic) okay?" None of the documents mentioned by Groucho are presenr. HAL KANTER produced, directed and wrote Diahann Carroll's groundbreaking television show, Julia, which premiered on NBC on September 17, 1968, the night before Groucho wrote this letter. The show was the first TV series since Beulah (1950-1953) to star a Black woman. Groucho appeared on the December 3, 1968 episode of Julia as Mr. Flywheel. The episode was entitled, "Farewell My Friend, Hello", a takeoff on Groucho's famous line: "Hello, I must be going". PALEY PARK, built in 1967, is at 5 East 53rd Street in Manhattan, just east of Fifth Avenue.
