GUGLIELMO MARCONI
Signed on his floating wireless laboratory.
Photograph Mount inscribed and signed: "To Arturo Lagorio/memory
of/Guglielmo Marconi/Yacht Elettra, Naples March 1928"
in Italian. B/w, 9½x13 overall, image 6x8 (two surfaces). The
Elettra was built in 1904 by the Scottish shipyard Ramage &
Ferguson in Leith for the Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria and was
originally named Rovenska. She was used by the British as a minesweeper
during WWI. The steam yacht was purchased by MARCONI in 1919, renamed
Elettra and converted into a floating laboratory. In addition to the
wireless laboratory, the yacht had cabins for Marconi and his wife, three guest
cabins, four bathrooms and an oak study. ARTURO LAGORIO's book The
Three Answers was published in 1925. Water damaged and worn, although the
writing is totally unaffected, indicating that Marconi may have inscribed and
signed the item after it was damaged.
