Günter Blobel (b. 1936), in Germany, was affiliated with Rockefeller University, New York. He received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1999 "for the discovery that proteins have intrinsic signals that govern their transport and localization in the cell." The University's press release after his award was announced described these signals as a cellular "ZIP code-like system" to route proteins to where they could perform their functions.
