GÜNTER GRASS
The winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999 signs in his book
Kinderlied: Poems and Etchings
Book signed: "Günter Grass" on a special title page. Kinderlied:
Poems and Etchings by Günter Grass, translated from the German by
Michael Hamburger, 68p, 11¼x8¾, hardcover, Lord John Press: 1982.
First Edition, numbered "146" of 300. This book, whose title is
translated as "Children's Song", is definitely not for children, although it
includes the innocent-sounding poems "Flag of Poland", "Nursery Rhyme" and "Tour
de France". Grass, who began writing poetry and plays in the 1950s, is best
known for chronicling Germany's turbulent 20th century history in novels
including The Tin Drum (English version, 1962). German novelist and
social critic Grass (1927-2015) was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize for
Literature for his body of work, which included his first novel, The Tin
Drum (1959), the first of his The Danzig Trilogy. The
trilogy, which also included Cat and Mouse and Dog
Years, captured German reaction to the rise of Nazism, the horrors of war
and the nation's guilt following Hitler's regime. Cover lightly scuffed.
