B/w 8 x 10. Photo: Maurice Seymour. Gus Arnheim (1887-1955) led one of
the most popular West Coast orchestras from 1927 through the 1930s, based
mostly at the Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles. Arnheim alumni included Stan
Kenton, Woody Herman, actor Fred McMurray (on sax), and Bing Crosby, who scored
his first solo hit, "I Surrender Dear," while singing with Arnheim. The band
appeared in 11 feature films between 1928 and 1944. Slight creasing and
rippling. Scratches near lower left corner. Pencil note (unknown hand) on
verso.
