The notorious Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives signs his name on official letterhead in black ink
Typed letter signed: "Gus" in black ink. 1 page, 8½x11. Written on Texas House of Representatives letterhead. Austin, Texas. July 31, 1972. Addressed to Mr. J.L. Pruett in Clute, Texas. In full: "Your very kind letter of recent date has been received, and it was a special treat to hear from you! Pursuant to your request, I am forwarding to you an autographed picture. It is my pleasure to work with you for a sound and progressive program for our Special Education and I sincerely appreciate the role that you are playing in an area which means so much to me. Best personal regards! Sincerely". Gus Franklin Mutscher (b. 1932) is a former Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, having served that position from 1969 until 1972. Mutscher is best known for his involvement in the Sharpstown bank stock fraud scandal, for which he was convicted and sentenced to five years' probation for conspiring to accept a bribe to push through favorable laws. Many members of the "Dirty Thirty", a name given to thirty members of the 1971 House of Representatives who grouped against Mutscher, were members of his own Democratic party. After his legislative service he was appointed and then elected as the administrative county judge of Washington County. His ex-wife was former Miss America Donna Axum of El Dorado, Arkansas. Lightly toned. Light surface creases. Corners rounded. Ink notes on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
