GUS WILLIAMS
The comic dialect actor and singer signs a sentiment.
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Yours Truly/Gus Williams/1885,"
3½x2¼ card. Gus Williams was the stage name, and eventually the legal
name, of the actor born Gustave Wilhelm Leweck, Jr. (1848-1915), the son
of a German merchant residing in New York. A drummer boy in the Civil
War, Williams began entertaining his fellow soldiers, and took the stage for
the first time in Union-occupied Huntsville, Alabama in 1864. After the war
Williams joined a vaudeville troupe; his specialty was songs and skits
employing a comic German accent. By 1879, he was playing character roles in
stage comedies. Williams wrote his own songs, mostly humorous but
sometimes sentimental. After decades of popularity, Williams' career was in
decline when he met with his booking agent in 1915, started for home,
telegraphed a friend to take care of his wife, and then shot himself in the
head. Lightly toned at right margin affecting some letters, else fine
condition.
