GUSTAV LUDERS
Signature given in New York in 1904, the year after the first production of his biggest hit musical, The Prince of Pilsener
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Very sincerely yours/Gustav Luders/ New York Theatre [?]/Nov. 23 - 1904", 6½x4. German-born composer and music director Gustav Luders (1865-1913) immigrated to the US from his native Germany in 1888. After a decade as an orchestra director, he gained fame as composer of light operas, including no fewer than 19 Broadway productions between 1899 and 1930. His most successful operetta was The Prince of Pilsener (1903, lyrics by Frank Pixley), was performed five times on Broadway through 1930 and still performed in regional theatre today. That show featured a widely popular song, the "Heidelberg Stein Song". The line delivered in the show by the starring beer baron, "Wass you effer in Cincinnati?" was oft repeated in vaudeville, and revived by Mel Brooks. Obituaries of the era claimed that Luders died of stress induced by the (unusual) failure of his last show. Notch on right edge. Heavily toned. Left edge frayed and cut from binding. Lightly soiled. Light surface creases. Stain on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
