GUSTAVE CHARPENTIER
Thanks from his conservatory, which gave free music lessons to working
women.
Printed Photograph inscribed and signed: "Thank you for Mimi
Pinson/Gustave Charpentier/1911" in French. B/w, 6½x9¾
overall, image 3½x5¼ (one surface). Gustave Charpentier (1860-1956) studied
music at the Paris Conservatory under composer Jules Massenet, developing a
passion for the bohemian life of Montmartre and a distaste for authority. In
Rome he wrote the orchestral suite Impressions d'Italie, the
symphony-drama La Vie du poète and the first
act of his most famous work, the opera Louise (1900). In 1901,
Charpentier founded the Conservatoire Populaire Mimi Pinson, which gave free
voice and music lessons to Parisian factory women. "Mimi Pinson" was the title
character in an 1845 story about a shop girl by French writer Alfred Musset.
Creased, light horizontal fold touches suit on image. Stray ink marks at blank
left edge. Overall, fine condition.
