D-DAY: GUSTAVE "JOE" MILTZ
Typescript describing the landing and quoting Miltz, who has signed
with a "God Bless America."
Typescript signed: "'God Bless America'/Gustave 'Joe' Miltz",
1 page, 8½x11. Typescript titled "D-Day". Four paragraphs about the invasion,
the final two devoted to the signer: "The incredibly loud shelling is something
that Army Signal Corps Sgt. Gustave 'Joe' Miltz will never forget. 'The sound
was deafening. The Germans had started sending off their big 88s, huge artillery
shells that began being lobbed at us. I looked up, and in the air, there were
hundreds of planes. I was worried about friendly fire, which now is a familiar
phrase. It was scary. I was hopped up. The adrenaline was flowing. You get
caught up in the whole gosh-darned thing, with the time, the situation. Your
mind is racing. Then they give the order and you GO!" The D-Day
landings, conducted by US, British and Canadian troops on the beaches of
Normandy on June 6, 1944 incurred heavy casualties, but were to prove
decisive in breaking the German hold on France and enabling a drive across
France and the Low Countries to assault Germany itself. On the 50th
anniversary of that landmark event, Gustave Joseph Miltz
(1922-2004) of Los Alamitos, California was one of several veterans
sharing his memories of that day. Fine condition.
