GUSTINUS AMBROSI
The sculptor describes his typical day in Vienna to a woman who wants to meet him
Autograph Letter signed in pencil: "Ambrosi", 2 pages (front and verso), 5½x3½ postcard. Vienna, postmark date illegible. To Trude Fleischmann, Vienna, in German, translated in full: "Madam! Come - best one day day about noon to the Prater. I am always there, but uncertain of the hour. When I am not in the atelier about noon, I am in the Gasthaus of the trotting race club that is in front of the trotting race course 150 paces from the atelier. I have dinner there among the coachmen. This week I am too bedeviled to give a precise hour, but please come! Be heartily welcomed by your obedient". Austrian sculptor Gustinus Ambrosi (1893-1975) was awarded the national prize for young artists in 1912, and held his first exhibition in 1916. During the inter-war period his work was in demand throughout Europe, and he maintained studios in Rome, Paris and Cologne. Although his personal art reflected emotively charged human figures, he was commissioned to make busts of public figures included Clemenceau, Mussolini and Pope Pius XI. During the Nazi era, he designed statues for the Reich Chancellery in Berlin and worked on Hitler's fanciful designs for a postwar Linz, Austria, but his advocates say he worked for the Nazis under duress and deliberately sabotaged some of his work. In any case, many of his works were destroyed during World War II. The Prater, mentioned in this letter, is a public park in Vienna where Ambrosi often worked. Slightly worn. Ink note (unknown hand) at top left. Otherwise, fine condition.
