GUTZON BORGLUM
Signed b/w photo of Borglum's sculpture of Lincoln's head in the U. S. Capitol Rotunda. Borglum is probably better known for his much much larger sculpture of Lincoln on Mount Rushmore.
Photograph signed: "Gutzon Borglum". B/w, 5½x8 overall, 4x5¼ image, one surface. Captioned: "Marble Head of Lincoln". Borglum's sculpture of Lincoln's head, carved from a six-ton block of marble, is housed in the rotunda of the Capitol in Washington, D.C. Borglum also made a statue of Lincoln seated on a bench in Newark, New Jersey, not to mention a much much larger sculpture of him on the famous Mt. Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota (1927-1941). Ironically, he died shortly before its completion and the memorial was completed by his son, whose name was Lincoln. Borglum (1867-1941, born John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum in St. Charles, Idaho), already famous for creating the great head of Lincoln in the U.S. Capitol rotunda, was commissioned to begin work on a "shrine of democracy" in 1927. After selecting Mount Rushmore as its site, he began work on 60-foot-high heads of Presidents George Washington (unveiled in 1930), Thomas Jefferson (1936), Abraham Lincoln (1937) and Theodore Roosevelt (1939), chosen to represent epic symbols of America. Borglum, who developed innovative stone-working methods to accomplish the massive project, died before its completion in 1941. Lightly creased and stained at blank margins, else fine condition.
