GUY BATES POST
The stage star and film character actor signs and dates a handwritten sentiment on a Hotel envelope.
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Yours truly/Guy Bates Post/1906", 5x3½ envelope (unmailed). Printed return address of the Virginia Hotel, Chicago. Guy Bates Post (1875-1968) appeared in 22 Broadway plays between 1901 and 1934. Among his major roles were The Virginian (1904), Omar the Tentmaker (1914) and The Masquerader (1917). In 1922, Post appeared in silent film versions of the latter two plays. In 1935, Post moved to Hollywood, and appeared in supporting film roles through 1947. Noteworthy was his performance as Louis Napoleon in the Jeannette MacDonald/Nelson Eddy musical Maytime (1937). From 1916 to 1929, Post was married to tempestuous stage singer and actress Adele Ritchie ("the Dresden China Prima Donna"), who would murder a professional rival and then taker her own life in a 1930 tabloid ending. Post later married another prominent stage actress, Lillian Kemble Cooper. Heavilty toned and soiled. Corners worn and creased. Heavy mounting residue on front and verso. Creased. Signature in fine condition.
