Stage, screen and television actress Gwen Verdon (1925-2000) made her debut on Broadway in Cole Porter's Can-Can, winning the 1953 Theatre World Award and the 1954 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She also won Tony Awards for Best Actress (Musical) for Damn Yankees (1956), New Girl in Town (1958) and Redhead (1959), and was nominated for Tonys in the same category for Sweet Charity (1976) and Chicago (1976). Verdon's films include David and Bathsheba (1951), Dreamboat (1952), The Cotton Club (1984), Cocoon (1985 and its 1988 sequel) and Marvin's Room (1996), and the versatile performer made guest appearances on a long list of TV variety shows and series.
