Check filled out and signed: "Gwendolyn Blakely", 6¼x2¾. Chicago, Illinois, 1956 January
19. Drawn on her account at Chatham Bank of Chicago, payable to "Illinois Bell Telephone
Co." for $13.42. Stamped endorsement on verso. Gwendolyn Brooks (1917-2000) won the
Pulitzer Prize in 1950 for her second book of poetry, Annie Allen, becoming the first
Black author to receive the honor. Her poetry, which was first published in 1945, later
focused on the African-American struggle for freedom. In 1968, Brooks was named Poet
Laureate of Illinois, succeeding Carl Sandburg. Brooks had married poet and writer Henry
Blakely in 1939, to whom she was wed until his death in 1996. Slightly creased. Bank
cancellation holes nick the upper portion of the "G" and touch several words of writing (all
legible). Light show through from bank stamps on verso touches date. Staple holes at upper
left margin. Fine condition.
