Check filled out and signed: "Gwendolyn Brooks Blakely", 6x2¾. Chicago, Illinois, 1980 May
25. Check No. 1171, drawn on her account at The First National Bank of Chicago, payable
to "American Express Company" for $871.50. Stamped endorsement on verso. Gwendolyn
Brooks (1917-2000) won the Pulitzer Prize in 1950 for her second book of poetry, Annie
Allen, becoming the first Black author to receive the honor. Her poetry, which was first
published in 1945, later focused on the African-American struggle for freedom. In 1968,
Brooks was named Poet Laureate of Illinois, succeeding Carl Sandburg. Brooks had married
poet and writer Henry Blakely in 1939, to whom she was wed until his death in 1996.
Lightly creased. Light show through of bank stamp on verso at the "Gwendol" of signature
and at several words of writing (all legible). Stamped numbers touch date. Overall, fine
condition.
