The Pulitzer prize winning poet signs a check for $6.00 to her
husband, writer Henry Blakely.
Check signed: "Gwendolyn Blakely", 6x2¾. Chicago, Illinois,
1959 September 21. Drawn on her account at Chatham Bank of Chicago,
payable to her husband, "Henry Blakely" for $6. Endorsed:
"Henry L Blakely/[address]/[several numbers]". Gwendolyn Brooks
(1917-2000) won the Pulitzer Prize in 1950 for her second book of poetry,
Annie Allen, becoming the first Black author to receive the honor.
Her poetry, which was first published in 1945, later focused on the
African-American struggle for freedom. In 1968, Brooks was named Poet
Laureate of Illinois, succeeding Carl Sandburg. Brooks had married poet
and writer Henry Blakely in 1939, to whom she was wed until his death in
1996. Lightly creased. Show through from bank stamps on verso at the "G" and at
the upper loops of the "l" in Gwendolyn and the "Bl" of Blakely". Bank
cancellation holes touch several words of writing. Fine condition.
