GWENDOLYN BROOKS, PAUL FUSSELL and others
Signed photograph at a literary gathering reception
Photograph signed: "Gwen/Brooks", "Paul Fussell", "Billy Edel" and one unidentified signer. B/w, 10x8. GWENDOLYN BROOKS (1917-2000) won the Pulitzer Prize in 1950 for her second book of poetry, Annie Allen. By the late 1950s, her poems began to focus on the African-American struggle for freedom. In 1968, Brooks was named Poet Laureate of Illinois, succeeding Carl Sandburg, and in 1985 she was named library consultant to the Library of Congress. She was the National Endowment for the Humanities Jefferson Lecturer in 1994, the highest literary award bestowed by the federal government. PAUL FUSSELL (b. 1924) a cultural and literary historian and the author of many books, won the Nation Book Award for The Great War and Modern Memory (1975). Fussell, wounded in combat in France in World War II and a sufferer of combat-related depression for years afterward, rights caustically about efforts to glamorize the combat experience. This piece merits further research. No information is presently available on Billy Edel. Lightly soiled and stained.
