 First Day Cover signed: "Gwendolyn Brooks" and "Richard Howard", 6½x3¾. FDC honoring the 150th Anniversary of the birth of American author, poet and naturalist Henry David Thoreau, 5-cent Thoreau stamp affixed, postmarked Concord, MA, July 12, 1967, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. GWENDOLYN BROOKS (1917-2000) won the Pulitzer Prize in 1950 for her second book of poetry, Annie Allen, becoming the first Black author to receive the honor. Her poetry, which was first published in 1945, later focused on the African-American struggle for freedom. In 1968, Brooks was named Poet Laureate of Illinois, succeeding Carl Sandburg. RICHARD HOWARD (1929-2022) won the Pulitzer Prize for Untitled Subjects (1969), his second book of poetry. The author of 11 books of verse, Howard has also translated some 150 French works and was Poet Laureate of the state of New York (circa 1993-1996; source dates vary). Slightly rippled at cachet.
