5½x8½, 24 pages, soft cover. Riot, by Gwendolyn Brooks. Detroit, Michigan: Broadside
Press, 1969. Signed on the title page. Gwendolyn Brooks (1917-2000) won the Pulitzer
Prize in 1950 for her second book of poetry, Annie Allen, becoming the first Black author
to receive the honor. Her poetry, which was first published in 1945, later focused on the
African-American struggle for freedom. In 1968, Brooks was named Poet Laureate of
Illinois, succeeding Carl Sandburg. Brooks had married poet and writer Henry Blakely in
1939, to whom she was wed until his death in 1996. Riot, a poem in three parts, arose from
the demonstrations which followed the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968. Corners
and edges lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
