GWENDOLYN BROOKS
The Pulitzer Prize winning poet signs this symposium program
Program signed: "Sincerely,/Gwendolyn/Brooks" on front cover, 4p, 5½x8½. Garden City, New York, 1974 March 12. Titled: "Symposium: Five Roads to Reality/Significance of the Word". Presented by HARAYA, the Black Student Union at Nassau Community College. Miss Brooks' talk was followed by a presentation to her. In the year she gave this talk at the College, Brooks published The Tiger Who Wore White Gloves, or What You Are, You Are. Gwendolyn Brooks (1917-2000) won the Pulitzer Prize in 1950 for her second book of poetry, Annie Allen, becoming the first Black author to receive the honor. Her poetry, which was first published in 1945, later focused on the African-American struggle for freedom. In 1968, Brooks was named Poet Laureate of Illinois, succeeding Carl Sandburg. Slightly creased. Fine condition.
