GWYNETH JONES, CARLO BERGONZI and PETER GLOSSOP
Program for a performance at the Royal Opera House signed and inscribed by opera performers Gwyneth Jones, Carlo Bergonzi, and Peter Glossop
Program inscribed and signed: "To Graham/Gwyneth Jones", "Peter Glossop" and "Carlo Bergonzi", 30 p, 7x7. London, England, 1965 November 22. Printed program for the Royal Opera House Covent Garden production of Il Trovatore, signed on cast page. Born in Wales in 1937, GWNETH JONES made her London debut replacing an ailing Leontyne Price in this opera in 1964. Moving from a largely Italian repertoire early in her career to the German works for which she was to become most famous, Jones has sung all of Wagner's lead soprano roles. She was honored as a Dame of the British Empire in 1986. CARLO BERGONZI (1924-2014) was imprisoned for anti-Nazi activities during World War II, delaying his operatic studies, but he was destined to become a tenor star on the stages of La Scala, Covent Garden, and the Metropolitan Opera. Though specializing in the works of Verdi, of which Il Travatore is one, he had over 40 roles in his repertory. A famed British baritone, PETER GLOSSOP (1928-2008) moved from opera to films as a sound designer and music director. He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Sound in Shakespeare in Love (1998). Light surface creases. Slightly toned. Edges and corners slightly worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
