GYPSY ROSE LEE
The actress responds to a letter on her impressions of meeting with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, saying that "The few occasions I was privileged to meet Mrs. Roosevelt are, of course, engraved in my mind"
Typed Letter signed: "Gypsy Rose Lee", 1p, 8½x11. Beverly Hills, California, 1968 November 23. On personal letterhead to Stella K. Hershan, Forest Hills, N.Y. In full: "The few occasions I was privileged to meet Mrs. Roosevelt are, of course, engraved in my mind. However, I have just returned from Viet Nam to find so much work piled up. I wish you much success with your book. Warm personal regards." Born Rose Louise Hovick, Gypsy Rose Lee (1914-1970) was put on vaudeville stages as a child by her ambitious mother, playing secondary roles behind her younger sister "Baby June", who became the actress June Havoc. Lee found her true niche as Gypsy Rose Lee, the most famous name in strip tease. In addition to appearing in films from 1937-1969 and on television from 1956, Lee also wrote a play (which became the 1945 film, Doll Face) novels and an autobiography. Her 1957 autobiography, Gypsy, premiered as celebrated Broadway musical in 1959 and was later made into two feature films of the same name. The addressee, Stella Hershan, went on to write both a biography of Eleanor Roosevelt and a collection of reminiscences by people who knew her, Candles She Lit (1993). Lightly creased, esp. on right margin. Corners lightly worn. Normal mailing folds. File holes at right have broken through to edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
