H.I. PHILLIPS The newspaper editor signs this typed letter explaining playfully that he takes advantage of free offers and asking if the recipient was someone he gave a job to once Typed letter signed: "Hi Phillips" in pencil. 8½x11. June 30, no year. To "Dear Louis Sobol:" in full: "Well, my crack about fifteen cents for the first mile in NY taxicabs exposes me. I have been getting out last and letting the other guy pay the fare for years, in keeping with my New England instincts. And I demand a retraction of your allegation that I squandered money on trolley cars back home. I walked- in the Joe Cook travelogue manner- down Sylvan avenue to South street to Broad, to Oak, to Congress, to Church to Crown, generally stopping at Adam Zeigler's going to work and at Emil Schultz's, Jake Mann's, the Oneco and Mike McGann's going home. P.S. I stopped fo [sic] the freelunch. Are you by any chance the young man who asked for a job on the register once and I signed you up (hours 8 to 4; salaries 4 to 8) with the provision you would ride me to and from work on the handlebars of your bicycle? Your devoted granffather [sic]". H.I. Phillips was a newspaper columnist and editor for The New York Sun. Signer merits further research. Toned and lightly creased throughout. Corners rounded. Normal mailing folds. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on front. Otherwise, fine condition.
