HERBERT S. OAKELEY. Autograph Letter signed: "H. S. Oakeley", 4p (integral leaf), 4½x7. Lord Warden Hotel, Dover, 1884 May 22. To Joseph Bennett, in full: "I am so much obliged for your kind & valuable notice of my Anthem, sung by Leslie's Choir, that I am impelled to express to you my thanks, & trust that my impulse may not bore you. Judging from my own feelings, & experience in a small way as critic, I am disposed to think that a sincere expression of gratitude will not be disapproved or misunderstood. And I do not delay such expression until I see you, as I am on the 'verge' of going to a bath abroad, for a fortnight, if lumbago does not prevent me - & may have no opportunity of sooner meeting you. If you have time, would you refer me to proof that the XIIth Mass is not by Mozart. Is this given by Otto John? I am Yours very truly". Herbert Stanley Oakeley (1830-1903) was a British composer best known for his church music. He taught music at the University of Edinburgh (1865-1891). Knighted in 1876, Oakeley was made Composer to Queen Victoria in Scotland in 1881. Joseph Bennett was a prominent English music critic. Lightly soiled. Mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
