Kaltenborn signed this letter, typed on the back of a postcard and addressed to Dr. Samuel W. Fernberger, in 1941. In it, he thanks Fernberger for "your very generous word of appreciation regarding Sunday's radio talk".
Typed letter signed "H V Kaltenborn". 1 page, 5¼x3½ postcard. Postcard has a b/w cachet of Kaltenborn on verso, captioned "H. V. KALTENBORN EDITS THE NEWS/on the NBC Network". With one 1¢ green-and-white George Washington stamp affixed. April 23, 1941, postmarked Brooklyn, New York. Addressed to Dr. Samuel W. Fernberger, College Hall, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on verso. In full: "Dear Dr. Fernberger: Many thanks for your very generous word of appre-ciation regarding Sunday's radio talk. I take pleasure in sending you half a dozen copies. It is good to have the approval of a man like your-self. It offsets the many brickbats that are coming my way. Sincerely yours,". Kaltenborn (1878-1965, born Hans Kaltenborn in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) was chief news commentator for CBS (1929-1940), switching over to NBC in 1940. He was famed for his almost nonstop broadcasts during the 1938 Munich crisis, his reports from the European and Pacific fronts in WWII and his coverage of presidential campaigns beginning in 1932. Kaltenborn was a panelist on the NBC TV quiz show, Who Said That? in 1954. Lightly toned, stained, soiled and creased. Normal postal stamps, which touch typed letter but not signature. Rounded corners. Otherwise in fine condition.
