H. V. KALTENBORN
As a television commentator, Kaltenborn responds to concerns about behavior at a political convention
Typed Letter signed: "H. V. Kaltenborn", 1p, 7¼x10½. On personal letterhead. New York, N.Y., 1956 September 11. To Mrs. N. F. Prentice, Glastonbury, Connecticut. In full: "You are quite right in calling attention to the lack of reverence exhibited by political convention delegates. The trouble is that they are not yet aware that they are being photographed, that millions see their lack of proper respect for the national anthem or for the spiritual meaning of prayer. The delegates were cautioned about it, but many of them forgot the caution. What it means is that we must continue to remind them that they are being seen and judged by what they do or fail to do. I am glad to know that you are concerned as I am about the effects of such thoughtlessness. Sincerely yours." Hans VonKaltenborn (1878-1965) was chief news commentator for CBS (1929-1940), switching over to NBC in 1940. He was famed for his almost nonstop broadcasts during the 1938 Munich crisis, his reports from European and Pacific fronts in WWII and his coverage of presidential campaigns beginning in 1932. Kaltenborn was a panelist on the NBC TV quiz show, Who Said That? in 1954. Pinhead sized spots in blank left margin. Horizontal fold crosses signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
