[HAL WALLIS]
Especially hungry while working on Christmas Eve, Wallis orders 6 orders of cold cuts, with a side of sliced tomatoes
Meal Ticket, unsigned, 3½x5¾. Meal ticket from the Cafe Continental, 196[?] December 24. Busy at work at Paramount studios on Christmas Eve, Wallis is charged for six orders of cold cuts and sliced tomatoes for $20.80, tip and tax included. Someone has signed Wallis' authorization, apparently the waitress. Hal B. Wallis (1898-1986) rose from office boy, forced by poverty to leave school at 14, to become one of Hollywood's most successful and respected producers. Working at Warner Bros. until 1944, he was an independent producer thereafter. His greatest triumph was Casablanca (1942), but he produced one movie blockbuster after another from Little Caesar (1930) to Rooster Cogburn (1975). His film credits read like the syllabus for a course in the history of American films: I am a Fugutive from a Chain Gang, The Charge of the Light Brigade, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Knute Rockne, All American, The Maltese Falcon, Sergeant York, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Gunfight at the OK Corral, King Creole, Becket and True Grit. The Academy of Motion Pictures twice honored him with the Irving Thalberg award. Binder holes at left edge. Staple holes at top. Ink stamp in center. Slight surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
