HAL EPPS
Blue ink signature on an unlined index card
Signature: "Hal Epps", 5x3 card. Hal Epps (1914-2004) was a minor league star who would
have spent more time on the Major Leagues in the era of free agency, but the St Louis
Cardinals, who owned his contract, already had a star-studded outfield. So Epps starred for
the Houston Buffs, leading them to victory in the Dixie League World Series in 1947.
Military service in World War II also interrupted Epps' baseball career. He did play parts of
4 seasons (1940-1943) in the big leagues for both St Louis teams (Cardinals and Browns) and
for the Philadelphia A's. He hit a home run in his first Major League at bat, and never hit
another. Fine condition.
