Hal Herring (1924-2014) was an American football coach and player who worked for five different college and NFL teams. He spent four seasons in the NFL as a center with the Buffalo Bills (1949) and Cleveland Browns (1950-1952). Following that season, Herring ended his playing career to accept a job as an assistant coach at Auburn University, his alma mater. In an era when football was moving away from teammates playing both offense and defense, Herring was one of the first coaches to focus exclusively as defensive coordinator. Despite a recruiting scandal he was directly implicated in, Herring had a very successful tenure at Auburn until 1965, when he moved to the NFL. He coached for the Atlanta Falcons (1966-1968) and San Diego Chargers (1970). Later in life, he became a sportswriter. In 2002, he was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. Fine condition.
