BASEBALL HALL OF FAME: EARL AVERILL, BILLY HERMAN, JUDY JOHNSON, CHARLIE GEHRINGER, BUCK LEONARD, MONTE IRVIN, BOB FELLER, and JOCKO CONLAN Pacific Coast League baseball signed by 8 members of the Hall, on the date of the 1975 induction ceremony (August 18). Three of these signers (Averill, Herman and Johnson) were enshrined in the Hall that very day! Baseball signed: "Chas Gehringer", "Earl Averill", "Jocko Conlon", "Judy Johnson", "Billy Herman", "Bob Feller", “Monte Irvin”, and “Buck Leonard”. Official Pacific Coast League Baseball, signed by all 8. Dated (unknown hand: “8-18-75”). On August 18, 1975, the Baseball Hall of Fame inducted five new members at the annual ceremony in Cooperstown, New York. EARL AVERILL (1902-1983) and BILLY HERMAN (1909-1992) were selections of the Veterans Committee; JUDY JOHNSON (1899-1989) was tapped by the Negro Leagues Committee. The other two enshrines that day were Ralph Kiner (by vote of the Baseball Writers Association) and Bucky Harris (by the Veterans Committee). Earl Averill, a slugging center fielder, spent 13 seasons in the American League, mostly with the Cleveland Indians, appearing in the first six All-Star games. BILLY HERMAN, a 10-time All-Star second baseman, spent 15 seasons in the National League with the Cubs, Dodgers, Braves and Pirates, playing in four World Series. JUDY JOHNSON, a slick fielding third baseman and contact hitter, starred in the first ever Negro World Series (1924) and managed the Pittsburgh Crawfords, the Negro League's greatest dynasty, in the thirties. Also signing were Detroit Tigers second baseman CHARLIE GEHRINGER (1903-1993), inducted in 1949; fireballing Cleveland Indians pitcher BOB FELLER (1918-2010) (inducted in 1962), Negro League slugging 1st baseman BUCK LEONARD (1907-1997) (inducted in 1972); Negro and National League outfielder MONTE IRVIN (1919-2016), later a public relations specialist for Major League Baseball (1973), and JOCKO CONLAN (1899-1989), a National League umpire for a quarter century. Of these eight signers, only Feller () and Irvin (b. 1919) are still living in mid-2010. Toned and soiled. Signatures clear and bold but printing faded.
