BASEBALL HALL OF FAMERS
Eight Baseball Hall of Famers sign this first day cover honoring the 22¢ Coil stamp
First Day Cover signed: "Buck Leonard", "Chas. Gehringer", "Bob Doerr", "Bob Lemon", "Hank Aaron", "Warren Spahn", "Lou Boudreau" and "Jim Catfish Hunter" in various inks, 6½x3½. First Day Cover honoring the 22¢ Coil stamp. Postmarked Washington, D.C., March 29, 1985. Two stamps affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. BUCK LEONARD was a slugging first baseman who led the Homestead Grays of the Negro League to ten consecutive pennants. Second baseman CHARLIE GEHRINGER (1903-1993) played his full 19-year Major League career with the Detroit Tigers. A six-time All Star (1933-1938), he was MVP in 1937. BOB DOERR was to the Red Sox what Gehringer was to the Tigers, playing second base with the Boston team for his entire career (1937-1951, interrupted by wartime service) and making the All-Star team nine times. BOB LEMON (1920-2000), a six-time 20-game winner, made the All-Star team for seven consecutive seasons (1948-1954). HANK AARON, the all-time career leader in home runs (755), made 23 All Star teams in a row (1954-1976). His long-time Braves teammate WARREN SPAHN won 20-games a record-tying 13 times and appeared in 14 All-Star games. Seven-time All-Star LOU BOUDREAU (1917-2001) was MVP in 1948, assisting teammate Lemon on a drive to the Cleveland Indian's most recent of two World Championships. JIM "CATFISH" HUNTER (1946-1999) was an eight-time All Star and postseason veteran with the A's and Yankees. The players' years of enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame are as follows: Gehringer (1949), Boudreau (1970), Leonard (1972), Spahn (1973), Lemon (1976), Aaron (1982), Doerr (1986) and Hunter (1987). Faint erasure at upper left. Otherwise, fine condition.
