HALLAM TENNYSON
Signed, handwritten 1893 letter, inviting visitors
Photograph signed: "Tennyson", 1 page, 4¼x3¾. Aldworth, Haslemere,
Surrey (England), 1893 August 7. On black-bordered mourning paper to
"My dear Mr. Barrett". In full: "Your letter has been forwarded
to me from the Isle of Wight. Best thanks, we cannot come this year. If you are
passing Haslemere Station on your way to the [illegible place name] or
back from the [same illegible place name], we shall be delighted to
welcome you at luncheon. Only let us know & we will meet you at the
station." Hallam Tennyson (1852-1928), the eldest son of Victorian
England's most beloved poet, Alfred Tennyson, became the second Baron Tennyson
upon his father's death in 1892. He was named for Arthur Hallam, his
father's friend and fellow poet who was engaged to Alfred Tennyson's sister at
the time of his death. Hallam Tennyson wrote a biography of his father in
1897. In 1899, he was appointed Governor of South Australia, ascending to
Governor-General of Australia in 1902. Despite his lack of political
experience, he proved a popular Governor-General. Lightly worn at edges. Fold
crease, not at signature. Fine condition.
