HALLAM TENNYSON
Signed Autograph Note on a postcard mailed to author George Somes Layard in
1904
Autograph Note signed: "Tennyson", 4½x3½ postcard. Addressed in his
hand to "G. Layard Esq./Felixtowe". In full: "I regret to say that
I have no letters from Miss Greenaway upon which I can put my hand for you."
Undated, but postmarked October 11, 1904. Hallam Tennyson
(1852-1928), the eldest son of Victorian England's most beloved poet, Alfred
Tennyson, became the second Baron Tennyson upon his father's death in 1892.
Hallam wrote a biography of his father in 1897. In 1899, Tennyson was
appointed Governor of South Australia; he ascended to Governor-General of
Australia in 1902. Despite his lack of political experience, he proved a
popular Governor-General. This letter was evidently written to author George
Somes Layard (1852-1925), who had written an 1895 book about Alfred Tennyson and
would be publishing a book in 1905 about Kate Greenaway (1846-1901), a
celebrated English book illustrator. Soiled. Horizontal crease at lower
margin.
