Autograph Sentiment signed: "Respectfully yours/Hamilton Fish/NY/May 16/84", 4¼x2¾. Hamilton Fish (1808-1893) served New York as Governor (1849-1850), Congressman (1843-1845) and Senator (1851-1857) and was Grant's only Secretary of State (1869-1877). Considered one of the ablest to hold that office, Fish contributed to the peaceful settlement of several international disputes, including two major ones with Britain. His son, grandson and great-grandson, each named Hamilton Fish, represented New York in the House of Representatives. Another grandson named Hamilton Fish was the first member of the Rough Riders to be killed in action during the Spanish-American War. Lightly smudged at "4". Toned.
