Autograph Sentiment signed on a 4x2 slip
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Hamilton Fish", 4½x1¾. "With the respects of" in another hand. Hamilton Fish (1808-1893) served New York as Governor (1849-1850), Congressman (1843-1845) and Senator (1851-1857) and was President Grant's only Secretary of State (1869-1877). Originally elected as a Whig, Fish joined the new Republican Party during his term in the Senate. He proved a very capable Secretary of State, peacefully resolving several thorny international disputes. His son, grandson and great-grandson, each named Hamilton Fish, represented New York in the House of Representatives. Irregularly cut. Slightly soiled. ¼-inch tear at left of upper edge. Mounting paper remnant on verso shows through lightly. Otherwise, fine condition.
