Partly Printed Document signed: "Hamilton Fish" as Secretary of State, 24x17 opened flat, 12x17 folded to scanned size. Washington, D.C., 1874 November 1. Old-style US passport, reading in part: "I the undersigned Secretary of State of the United States of America, hereby request all whom it may concern to permit safely and freely to pass Newell Clark accompanied by his wife, a citizen of the United States, and in case of need to give him all lawful Aid and Protection. ..." Physical description of Clark supplied in ink at left side (unknown hand). Impression of the Seal of the Department of State. The space for Signature of the Bearer is not filled in. Hamilton Fish (1808-1893) served New York as Governor (1849-1850), Congressman (1843-1845) and Senator (1851-1857) and was Grant's only Secretary of State (1869-1877). His son, grandson and great-grandson, each named Hamilton Fish, represented New York in the House of Representatives. Multiple horizontal and vertical folds. 1½ slit at right edge of center horizontal fold and small ware holes at 2 intersections of same horizontal fold. Lightly soiled and toned. Round date stamp at upper right margin area indicating 1872 June 1. Overall, fine condition.
