HAMILTON FISH
As Secretary of State (1873), he signs a manuscript letter to Interior Secretary Columbus Delano.
Manuscript Letter signed: "Hamilton Fish" as Grant's Secretary of State, 1 page, 7¾x10. Department of State, Washington, 1873 February 19. To "The Honorable C. Delano, Secretary of the Interior." In full: "I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 17th instant, and to say that, agreeably to your request, the letter enclosed therewith for the Consul General at Havana, has been forwarded to his address." HAMILTON FISH (1808-1893) served New York as Governor (1849-1850), Congressman (1843-1845) and Senator (1851-1857) and was President Grant's only Secretary of State (1869-1877). Originally elected as a Whig, Fish joined the new Republican Party during his term in the Senate. He proved a very capable Secretary of State, peacefully resolving several thorny international disputes. His son, grandson and great-grandson, each named Hamilton Fish, represented New York in the House of Representatives. Columbus Delano, a former US Representative from Ohio and US Commissioner of Internal Revenue, served as Grant's Secretary of the Interior from 1870-1875. Delano resigned amidst corruption charges so common in the Grant administration (but never involving Secretary Fish). Slightly creased. Fine condition.
