Hank Bauer handwrote and signed this note on the back of a fan letter
from Frances Smith of Brooklyn, New York in 1980. With original mailing
envelope.
Autograph note signed "Sorry, don't have any pictures. Hank
Bauer". 1 page, 6x9 ruled paper. Written on verso of an undated fan letter
from Frances Smith of Brooklyn, New York. Lightlytoned. Signature is
lightly yellowed. Light show-through on both sides, which touches signature.
Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by:
Original mailing envelope. With Bauer's name, signed in Smith's hand, in
return address on flap. Postmarked Kansas City, Missouri, Sept. 29, 1980.
Addressed to F. A. Smith, Brooklyn, New York. With one 15¢ yellow-and-brown
windmill stamp affixed. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Folded once and
unfolded. Torn open at top flap. Right flap has separated from back of envelope.
Otherwise in fine condition. Addressed to Bauer (1922-2007, born Henry
Albert Bauer in East St. Louis, Illinois) didn't give away runs or make mental
mistakes, and he had a fierce determination to win. Bauer collected nine
World Series checks while with the Yankees. A solid hitter with both power
and speed, Bauer started three straight All-Star games (1952-1954),
and he hit 26 HRs in 1956 and 18 first-inning leadoff HRs in his career.
Bauer hit a three-run triple in the finale of the 1951 WS, and he secured the
4-3 win over the Giants with a sliding catch in right field as the would-be
tying run was streaking home. From 1956-1958, Bauer set a WS record with a
17-game hitting streak. He was eventually traded to the A's in the deal that
brought Roger Maris to New York. Bauer later managed the Orioles to the 1966
World Championship.
