HANK THOMPSON
The country music star signs his name on this First Day Cover honoring Tom Sawyer
First Day Cover signed: "Hank/Thompson" in red ink, 6½x3½. First Day Cover honoring Tom Sawyer, 8-cent stamp affixed. Postmarked Kansas City, Missouri; June 19, 1973. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Hank Thompson (1925-2007) had his own local radio show, billed as "Hank the Hired Hand," while still in high school. After naval service in World War II, Thompson studied electrical engineering at Princeton on the GI Bill, but decided on a music career. One of the biggest country music stars of the 1950s and 1960s, Thompson scored hit after hit, including his signature song, "The Wild Side of Life" (1952). With tastes in country music changing toward a more pop-oriented sound, Thompson remained successful by featuring strong bands, slick showmanship, and innovative approaches which included the latest recording techniques and the first TV variety show broadcast in color (from Oklahoma City). Thompson entered the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1989. Fine condition.
